Hello
My name is Kendal, and I love textiles and history.
I’ve been a maker and a creator since childhood - my mother would’ve told you she had no idea where it came from - and I’ve been a self-taught seamstress for as long as I can remember. Albeit, I’m more skilled now than I was at age 7.
I solidified those self-taught skills through a BA Hons. Textile Art, Design, and Fashion degree at Ulster University, where I graduated with a 1:1.
For me, re-enactment has been a way to marry together my practical knowledge of textile techniques, with my love of educating. To bring history to life and make it accessible through tangible skills and crafts, which intrigue and entertain.
I find great joy in researching historical garments and recreating them with as much authenticity as possible. Every stitch, fabric choice, and pattern detail is meticulously considered to ensure that the final piece is a true reflection of its era. This measured approach not only satisfies my passion for history but also provides a hands-on educational experience for those who encounter my work.
Participating in historical re-enactments has allowed me to connect with a community of like-minded enthusiasts who share a passion for the past. We gather at events, dressed in period attire, to educate the public about viking age life through demonstrations, storytelling, and interactive displays.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the reactions of people when they see historical garments up close. They often express amazement at the intricate details and the level of skill required to create such pieces. It’s fulfilling to know that I am helping to preserve and promote an appreciation for traditional textile arts and historical knowledge.
Through Bygul Designs, I use my expertise and attention to detail, to create high quality, custom made historical clothing for living historians and re-enactors, which will stand the test of time.
I also offer workshops and educational programmes to share my knowledge with others, to encourage a new wave of exploration into the fascinating world of historic textiles.
